The Hurtigruten - Visit to Trondheim (3rd Day)Coastal Voyage to Norway’s First Capital, the City of Wood
A couple of days after leaving Bergen, the Norwegian Coastal Steamer stops for a several hours at Trondheim.
Passengers travelling on the Hurtigruten leave Bergen on the evening of the first day, and spend the next day seeing the stunning scenery of the Geiranger Fjord. After breakfast on the third day, the shop docks at Trondheim, where it stays for around four hours, allowing time for an enjoyable visit and quite a lot of sightseeing. Trondheim – Norway’s First Capital City In terms of architecture, Trondheim is a city of wood. The brightly coloured wooden buildings line the River Nid, and one can cross the old city bridge to see the charming old (and in some cases new) wooden buildings at Bakklandet. It is most enjoyable to just wander around admiring the houses…unless it is raining, which is highly likely in this part of Norway. If this is the case – or even if the sun is shining – the Nidaros Cathedral is well worth a visit, with its magnificent architecture and impressive stained glass windows. The Afternoon on the HurtigrutenThe ship leaves Trondheim at 12 noon, and is soon out in the wide Trondheimsfjord, with large, well-maintained farmsteads on the starboard side. The afternoon is spent on board, but there is plenty to see. The ship passes a rather picturesque lighthouse in the middle of a fjord. And there are numerous modern bridges spanning fjords. These make road travel throughout Norway far easier than it used to be, in the days when there were either no roads, or one had to painstakingly drive right round each and every fjord. The slender bridges are quite beautiful in their own right. Activities on the ShipSince the Hurtigruten is not a cruise ship in the accepted sense of the word, there will be no organised activities on board ship. But there is plenty to do. Many passengers enjoy sitting in one of the lounges watching the spectacular and ever-changing scenery. It is most enjoyable to walk around the deck, often stopping to talk to one’s fellow passengers….but one needs to take a jacket, even in summer. Some of the more modern ships have facilities such as swimming pools (outdoor!!!), jacuzzis, and beauty treatments available. And passengers can always read up on the next stop…and the next…. The Final Hours of the DayThe ship continues north through the narrow Stokksund sound at about 4 pm and on towards the open sea at Folda, before arriving in Rorvik in the evening. The next day the ship crosses the Arctic Circle in the early morning…so perhaps an early night is to be recommended!
