The Contemporary Cruise

The ideal gift for the enthusiastic cruiser

A new book about cruising features beautiful photography and extracts from the travel journals of keen cruiser Dutchman Iwein Maassen.

A new book, The Contemporary Cruise, is a glossy coffee-table publication dedicated to the adventurous, luxurious and photogenic aspects of cruising. It’s written by Dutch photographer and communications specialist Iwein Maassen and features everything from iconic ships to expedition voyages and river cruises.

The mixture of cruises is eclectic but this is by no means a comprehensive guide – Silversea and SeaDream Yacht Club are missing, for example, and surely represent some of the most contemporary and stylish ships of all? This is more of a personal anthology of cruises. The book also only focuses on three ports of call, Miami, Barcelona and St Petersburg, none of which can be described as especially cutting edge in terms of exploration.

The photography, however, is undeniably stunning and the book is an inspiration to aspiring cruise ship photographers, capturing unusual angles, beautiful portraits and making even freighters look like objects of grace and beauty. It’s a great gift for the keen cruiser or travel photographer and is available in English from Thames & Hudson, www.thamesandhudson.com.
