There are several cruise lines which sail through the Panama Canal and most stop at the same ports of call. This cruise was on the beautiful Summit.

As the ship sailed out of Los Angeles people strolled around the decks admiring the gorgeous decor. In the evening it was found that the food is divine and the crew are smart and friendly. The Atrium (where, during sea days, there are often demonstrations such as cooking and ice-carving) livens up in the evening with music provided by small combos and, occasionally, a classical pianist.

Other evening entertainment provided by Celebrity Cruises includes superb New York Broadway-style shows with great singers and dancers, movies, the casino, and bars for those who just want to relax with friends over a drink or two.

There are daytime activities as well as the swimming pool and hot tubs. For many people the best place is the spa. As well as the sauna and hairdressing salon there are massages of all types - just what you need after a tiring day ashore.

CABO SAN LUCAS

The first port of call was at Cabo San Lucas on the southern tip of Baja California. Although this is a comparatively 'new' town it leaves one with the impression that it is hoping to emulate Acapulco.

There is a wide range of tours available including one which toured the coastline and inland. There is a stop along the coastline to view the terrain and the beautiful clear turquoise waters, then a drive to the lovely old town of San Jose del Cabo. There we visited the Mission Church and wandered around the shops.

On the way back to the ship we stopped at the Cacti Mundo Botanical Gardens where there are 550 different species of cacti. They are laid out in beds showing which types are herbal, which are alcoholic etc. One example of the latter is the Blue Agave which produces Tequila.

ACAPULCO

Acapulco is described as glittery and glamorous; spontaneous and splashy. It is certainly all of that. As it is also the birthplace of Mexican tourism it is now the largest resort city in Mexico.

There are lots of excursions available for everyone, including the children. Between the beaches, water sports, parks, an aquarium, an island zoo and, of course, shops, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

The most famous on-shore tour is to the hilly peninsula beyond Malecon to watch the cliff divers. Breathtaking. So is the diving. The diver has to prepare himself mentally and wait for the right moment when an incoming wave floods the canyon more than 150 feet below. Then he makes his graceful dive. Sometimes two or three divers will fly down together. It really is a magnificent sight to see.

These are just two of the ports of call in Mexico for cruise ships. Others along these coast line are Huatulco (Mexico), and Costa Rica. From there some ships sail to the Panama Canal and Aruba.
