When taking a Europe cruise that starts or ends in Civitavecchia, passengers can stay additional days in Rome to take advantage of the historic city. There are numerous hotels located near the Spanish Steps (Piazza di Spagna), the Trevi Fountain, the Colosseum and Vatican City. Here are some of the best hotels near Rome’s top historic attractions.

- Hotel Gladiatori – This 5 star hotel was transformed out of the ancient gladiator barracks near the Colosseum. Rooms are now furnished with WiFi internet access and satellite TV. Deluxe rooms and suites overlook the Colosseum. Cheapest rates are the non-refundable internet ones that start at 210 Euros for a double. Or, expect to pay the rack rate of around 410 Euros for the same double room during high season.
- Hotel d’Inghilterra – Set in a 17th century palazzo, this elegant hotel was once a guesthouse of the Torlonia princess. It is conveniently located near the Spanish Steps and in Rome’s haute couture shopping area. There are 89 rooms and suites each with its own identity featuring period furniture and marble bathrooms. The rooms on the fifth floor enjoy their own private terraces. High season room rates start at 220 Euros for a double.
- Residenza Paolo VI – This is the closest hotel to Vatican City, standing directly on St. Peter’s Square. It is housed in a former monastery and features 29 guestrooms and suites. On the top floor, the Bernini Room offers a complimentary buffet breakfast and evening snacks with cappuccinos. High season room rates start at 125 Euros for a double and go up to 419 Euros for a junior suite that offers a spectacular view of St. Peter’s Square.
- Hotel White – Located between the Spanish Steps and the Pantheon, it is also close to the Trevi Fountain. This 4 star hotel was renovated in 2007 and its 40 guestrooms feature wood floors, travertine marble bathrooms, and internet access. Stay three consecutive nights and pay only 165 Euros per night which includes airport pickup, a bottle of wine upon arrival, and a daily American breakfast. Single night rates start at 310 Euros for a double.
- Hotel Fontana – Directly across from the Trevi Fountain, this 3 star hotel is all about location. The building once served as a monastery, and was converted to a hotel in the late 1700s. The 25 rooms are rich in character, each featuring a different decor. There is a buffet breakfast served in the rooftop lounge with unobstructed views of the Trevi Fountain. High season room rates start at 195 Euros for a double.
For alternative accommodation, many Rome airport hotels are cheaper than the hotels in the Ancient City with some providing transportation for a nominal fee.
